Gifted and Talented Self-Audit & Reflection Tool

Kyra Wilcox-Conley from the Heartland AEA will provide online professional development to reflect on and evaluate your gifted program. This event will be held in February 2021 to coincide with the ITAG Conference. More details forthcoming on times and registration.

In four hours of professional learning, participants will learn to use the Gifted and Talented Program Self-Audit & Reflection Tool (SART). SART is a Google Sheets-based series of rubrics designed to help districts evaluate the current state of their GT programs and create long-term strategic plans to guide their work.

Participants will learn about the features of the tool and begin to complete the audit in a guided practice workshop. Participants will leave the workshop with the start of a multi-year action plan to bring back to their district.

 

The SART is

  • based on best practices and national standards in gifted and talented education.
  • designed for districts to focus conversations and reflections on the seven minimum requirements for a Talented and Gifted program according to Chapter 12 (12.5(12)) of the Iowa Administrative Code.
  • a tool for having district conversations about ways to best meet the needs of gifted children K–12 and to determine what changes need to occur in teaching and programming in order to challenge students.

Attendees will leave the workshop with

  • Specification of relative strengths and weaknesses in your GT program in the areas of identification, goals and performance measures, qualitatively differentiated programming, staff qualifications, budget, in-service design, and review and evaluation.
  • Insights into equity needs in your gifted programming for English Language Learners, minority students, and twice expectional students
  • The start of a multi-year action plan to bring back to their district.

Individuals are welcome, but a pair or a team from a district would be ideal.

The tool may be effectively used by schools outside the state of Iowa by substituting any references to Iowa law with the requirements set forth by the state in which the school is located or by removing them entirely if they are not applicable.

 

Presenter bio

Kyra Wilcox-Conley is the consultant for gifted and talented at Heartland AEA, a position that she came into after many years in schools as an administrator, GT teacher/coordinator, and art teacher. She revised the already excellent SART tool that Mary Meineke (Schmidt) and Linda Moehring originally authored to include expanded analysis capabilities as well as to pull the program evaluation rubrics and action planning into one electronic file. When not geeking out over spreadsheets, she enjoys drawing, gardening, and hanging out with her family.
